Tips for Using Vertical Space Around Your Home

Tips for Using Vertical Space Around Your Home
Utilize the Vertical Space in Your Linen Closet, Bathroom, and Bedroom Closets. Make Space When You Need It.

Linen Closet

The linen closet often has unused vertical space. When you look at that top shelf, do you have space above it? This space often seems unusable because it’s too close to the light or just plain unreachable. However, you can make use of this space and make more room on your shelves. I keep a small step ladder folded and leaning against the linen closet wall.

Install a hanging bar up close to the light. Make sure that you replace the light bulb with a cool bulb designed for closets and give the bulb a few inches of clearance. Use this space to hang tablecloths, sleeping bags, table runners, sheets, comforters, blankets, and curtains. Use garment bags to keep them from getting dusty while they’re in storage. I even keep a garment bag with my scissors, tape, ribbon and wrapping paper in the top of my linen closet. Take advantage of that wasted space! Use your imagination and put it to good use. No one says you can’t store coats and suits in there either!

Bathroom

Install tall corner shelves in your bathroom to keep things that take up too much space underneath your sink. Keep your new bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap and razors stored away from the ones that you’re currently using. Use the space behind the door for a small, but tall, cabinet for your curlers, hair dryer, curling irons, and other bulky bathroom items. Use a wine rack or a pantry door rack on the back of the bathroom door for supplies, towels and wash cloths. Install hooks for your bath robes. Don’t forget to utilize the space above the toilet. Cabinets and shelves work well here.

The most wasted vertical bathroom space is underneath the sink. Use risers or a spring-loaded small curtain rod underneath the sink for hanging things with triggers. Utilize baskets and removable shelves to lift the things in the back up where you can see them.

Bedroom Closets

Use Only SlimLine Hangers in your bedroom closets to double or triple the space available. Hanging multiple items from one hanger by piggy-backing the hangers is a great way to save space. Installing a top and bottom hanging bar is a great way to utilize vertical space. You can also install shelves all the way around the top and down the front corners of the closet. This makes a great place for shoe boxes or other household items that you want to keep in your closet.
